Lambi Dehar

“Abandoned limestone quarry ruins above the Doon Valley, left behind after India’s first major environmental court order shut the mines down.”

Lambi Dehar
The Story

A place with a memory.

Perched along the cloud-veiled ridges near Mussoorie, Lambi Dehar represents one of modern India's most significant industrial ruins. Throughout the mid-20th century, extensive open-cast limestone quarrying ripped through the Himalayan slopes, inflicting severe lung ailments upon hundreds of laborers and stripping the Doon Valley of its protective canopy.

In the 1980s, local communities and environmentalists filed a landmark public interest litigation in the Supreme Court of India. The historic ruling permanently shut down the quarrying operations to halt ecological ruin, leaving behind an eerie, overgrown ghost colony of collapsed worker settlements, limestone rubble, and rusting machines. As nature gradually reclaims the hillside, the site remains an atmospheric monument to the ecological cost of unchecked industrial exploitation.
